An Observational Determination of the Bolometric Quasar Luminosity Function

چکیده
We combine a large set of quasar luminosity function (QLF) measurements from the rest-frame optical, soft and hard X-ray, and nearand mid-infrared bands to determine the bolometric QLF in the redshift interval z = 0 − 6. Accounting for the observed distributions of quasar column densities and variation of spectral energy distribution (SED) shapes, and their dependence on luminosity, makes it possible to integrate the observations in a reliable manner and provides a baseline in redshift and luminosity larger than that of any individual survey. We infer the QLF break luminosity and faint-end slope out to z ∼ 4.5 and confirm at high significance (& 10σ) previous claims of a flattening in both the faintand bright-end slopes with redshift. With the best-fit estimates of the column density distribution and quasar SED, which both depend on luminosity, a single bolometric QLF self-consistently reproduces the observed QLFs in all bands and at all redshifts for which we compile measurements. Ignoring this luminosity dependence does not yield a self-consistent bolometric QLF and there is no evidence for any additional dependence on redshift. We calculate the expected relic black hole mass function and mass density, cosmic X-ray background, and ionization rate as a function of redshift and find they are consistent with existing measurements. The peak in the total quasar luminosity density is well-constrained at z = 2.15± 0.05. We provide a number of fitting functions to the bolometric QLF and its manifestations in various bands, and a script3 to return the QLF at arbitrary frequency and redshift from these fits. A Physical Model for the Origin of Quasar Lifetimes
We propose a model of quasar lifetimes in which observational quasar lifetimes and an intrinsic lifetime of rapid accretion are strongly distinguished by the physics of obscuration by surrounding gas and dust. Quasars are powered by gas funneled to galaxy centers, but for a large part of the accretion lifetime they are heavily obscured by the large gas densities powering accretion. During this ...
متن کاملAn Investigation into the Effects of Luminosity on the Mid-Infrared Spectral Energy Distributions of Radio-Quiet Quasars
We present an analysis of the effects of luminosity on the shape of the mid-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 234 radio-quiet quasars originally presented by Richards et al. In quasars without evident dust extinction, the spectrally integrated optical and infrared luminosities are linearly correlated over nearly three decades in luminosity. We find a significant (& 99.99% confide...
متن کاملOn the Dust Tori in Palomar-green Quasars
The dust clouds in the torus of the quasar are irradiated by the central source, and the clouds at the inner radius of the torus re-radiate mostly in the near-infrared (NIR) wavebands. The ratio of the near-infrared luminosity to the bolometric luminosity LNIR/Lbol can therefore reflect the torus geometry to some extent. We find a significant correlation between the ratio of the near-infrared l...

This is the first paper of a series on the methods and results of the Active Galactic Nuclei In Cosmological Simulations (AGNICS) project, which incorporates the physics of AGN into GalICS, a galaxy formation model that combines large cosmological Nbody simulations of dark matter hierarchical clustering and a semi-analytic approach to the physics of the baryons. The project explores the quasar-...
متن کاملX - rays from the Type II quasar in the hyperluminous infrared galaxy IRAS F 15307 + 3252
We report the detection of X-ray emission from the hyperluminous infrared galaxy IRAS F15307+3252 at z = 0.93 and its properties obtained from XMM-Newton observations. Although the X-ray emission is very faint and the data are noisy, a prominent line-like feature in the observed 3–4 keV range is inferred from both photometric and spectroscopic techniques. It indicates an X-ray spectrum dominate...
